Vitamin C and Beautiful Skin

There are many articles out on the World Wide Web that talk about ways to help fight acne and have beautiful skin. Skincare is a hot topic that we cannot seem to get enough of. Some articles have homemade remedies for acne while others review acne treatments. Others suggest that it is a good idea to eat foods that have lots of Vitamin C in it because that will help our acne and skin but they don’t explain why. With this article we will look at the “why” and try and see how Vitamin C is beneficial to our skin and treatment of acne.

Vitamin C Essentials

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that humans must have or we will die. Our bodies cannot produce this nutrient nor can we store it up so we must consume foods and supplements that provide us with enough Vitamin C so that we can function properly on a regular basis. Thankfully most foods that we eat have at least some Vitamin C in it even if it is used as an additive.

How it Helps

Vitamin C can help strengthen our immune system and it acts as an antioxidant working to keep harmful toxins and free radicals under control. Vitamin C also helps the body create collagen. Collagen is used to make tendons and ligaments, cartilage and blood vessels, skin and scar tissue. It also helps to repair and maintain damaged skin and heals wounds; this is how it helps pimples.

Vitamin C and Acne

When we suffer from breakouts, especially severe acne, our skin becomes damaged. The skin can scar up from the pimples and collagen helps to repair that damaged tissue. It also helps to regenerate skin cells so that dead skin cells slough off and are replaced with new ones. This is important because it helps to keep the skin looking young and fresh and helps to keep the pores from getting clogged.

Dosage and Sources

We have looked at ways that Vitamin C help our body but we also learned that our body needs the nutrient otherwise it would start shutting down; so how much Vitamin C should we have to help rejuvenate our skin? The recommended amount varies but it averages out to about 90mgs a day for men and 75mgs for women. This can be consumed either in a multivitamin supplement or by eating foods that are rich in Vitamin C such as oranges and sweet potatoes.

There you have it a little more in depth look at what Vitamin C can do for our skin and how it can help with acne. Increasing our Vitamin C intake alone won’t get rid of acne but coupled with your favorite acne remedy it can help keep your skin looking young and fresh while fighting off those annoying pimples.
