There are many steps to take to become a massuse. Training may differ from what massage school or certified program you enroll in. Generally you must have a G.E.D or high school diploma to enroll and complete a 500-600 hour program. Then take a state-administered exam and pass a certificate program to obtain a license.
Employement
It would be better to start off as an employee instead of being self-employed so that you can hone your skills and master your craft. While under employment you will be able to take the time to build up a clientele base and save up for your own office space or become a traveling massage therapist! Once you have some experience under your belt you may choose to become self-employed and enjoy flexible hours.
A self-employed massuse may travel to their customer’s home or work place allowing free and flexible scheduling. Most massages can range up to $30-$90 an hour or more plus tips, depending on the employment status. The best news is that this career has stability now and in the future! Due to advanced knowledge of the medical benefits behind a massage, the need of a massuse in the work field is increasing.

State regulations generally include how clean the office is, if the shop passes state safety guidelines and that there are no hazards in the work place. All employees must obtain their license if there is someone that hasn’t completed the course then there could be a fine of up to $1,000 and they could lose their job. All employees must also pass a drug screen and any other health inspections required.
Work
Workers often trade free massages amongst themselves to help further their education and try different techniques. You might also learn some helpful tips that you can use to relieve stress upon yourself. It helps a massuse to know what their clients are feeling and how each technique works on them. It is great practice to have massages done to yourself so that you can experience first-hand what the client will go through.
