Acne lotions or a prescription topical (applied to the exterior skin) remedies are used to help get rid of dead skin cells, boost cell turn-over, dry up excess oil, and clear up hair follicles.
Acne lotions are used on low to mild breakouts and can be applied over the target area, either the face or other part of the body, in the morning and/or at night. They work by drying up the excess oil and sloughing off dead skin cells. These lotions can have a tendency to overly dry out the skin so use as instructed or follow up with a hydrating lotion.
Prescription topical treatments are used for worse cases of acne or breakouts that don’t respond to the over-the-counter lotions. This type of treatment is only prescribed by your doctor or dermatologist. Topical medications help with cell turn-over and clear up hair follicles.
Both remedies can take some time to work and should only be used as instructed. If irritation occurs you may need to see your doctor or use a smaller dosage until your skin gets used to the treatment.
