Dentist Jobs: A Look at Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists

Dentistry is an important part of our medical world, and dental jobs are among the most sought after jobs with college grads. Everyone in the dental office plays an important role in keeping the patient’s teeth and gums healthy. There are many dental associates that make up any given dentist office, and here we will explore two of these careers: dental assistant and a dental hygienist to see who they are, what they do and how much they generally make.

Dental Assistants

We will look at dental assistant jobs first. They do much of the leg dental work required in a busy dental office. They are considered the nurse of the dental field. An assistant has many different responsibilities in the office. The will also sterilize and disinfect all dental equipment. They prepare and layout dental instruments for the dentist to use.

A dental assistant also has the role of keeping accurate records of each patient. They prepare patients for treatments. Many assistants will give post-care instructions to the patient. They also remove any stitches the patient may have.

The assistant works side-by-side with a dentist. This is so that the he or she can supervise them at all times.

This job tends to be full time. Many work for 40 plus hours per week. In some cases they will need to work Saturdays as well as some evenings during the week. It all depends on the hours that the practice is open.

Secondary education is not necessary to fill this role, although it is preferred. Many community colleges and trade schools offer classes in dental assisting, along with other dental jobs, and usually only take a year to complete. They can expect to earn at least $20,000 annually.

Dental Hygienist

Next we will examine dental hygienist jobs. Their job is one of the most important in a dental clinic. They provide care to the patient by removing soft and hard deposits from their teeth.

They teach their patients the importance of good oral hygiene. They also have the job of evaluating a patient’s teeth and gums for any type of abnormalities and diseases. They will often be found working beside the dentist during many procedures.

Dental offices tend to only hire a hygienist for part time use. This allows them to hold jobs at several dental practices at one time to make a full time income.

There are different degrees and certificates that can be obtained through secondary schooling. Each college has their own specifications as to which classes a hygienist needs before a diploma is given.

Every state also requires that the hygienist be licensed for them to practice. Some states require a written exam as well as a clinical examination. Other states only require the hygienist to do the clinical examination. Many dental hygienists can earn an annual salary of at least $40,000.

These are just some of the dentist jobs that one can obtain in the field of dentistry.  The environments are very clean and overall friendly. My own visits to the dentist have been very positive, and I find the people working there to be friendly. If either one of these jobs sound like something you would like to know more about you may contact your local community college or visit their website. Typically they are eager to help potential students with their questions.
