When adults are considering the best type of braces to get, the extent of the misaligned teeth, budget limitations, the length of treatment necessary and the appearance of the braces when worn are all considerations in order to make the right choice.
Dental work in the form of braces applied to misaligned teeth can help the teeth that are growing or have already grown out to become straightened. This is done by applying gentle pressure over a certain period of time.
Ceramic Option
In addition to the traditional stainless steel or metal braces, metal braces on the back of the teeth, clear braces and Invisalign braces, ceramic braces are becoming more and more popular with both children and adults because they feature numerous benefits.
Made from a composite material, ceramic braces are quite durable. They are attached to the teeth using plasma light and a strong adhesive. This process makes the braces very difficult to dislodge from the teeth.
Camouflaged Braces
Many people like the fact that because they are made in the same color as teeth, ceramic braces are difficult to detect while being worn so their appearance is minimized. The ceramic brackets (the part of the brace that is attached to a tooth) are also stain resistant, another good feature, although the elastic ties attaching the wires to the braces can be stained from such foods as coffee, wine and curries. The ties, however, are changed about once a month each time the braces are adjusted.
Fun Colors
Ceramic braces are very comfortable to wear and although in reality they are larger than metal braces, most patients report that they produce less irritation to the lips and gums. Patients who want to make a fashion statement can have their ceramic braces colored and the elastic ties also come in an array of different colors. Children and the young at heart particularly like this benefit because it adds an element of fun to wearing braces and the color of the ties can be changed at each adjustment if desired.
Ceramic braces are not suitable for very severe cases of misalignment and the time it takes to effect a change in the teeth while wearing ceramic braces can be several months longer than traditional metal braces. Although ceramic braces do cost more than metal braces, most patients feel that their comfort level and minimum visibility makes them well worth the additional investment.
